WOMEN'S CIRCLE: Helga Masker

How did you get started in drag racing and how long have you been racing?

This is my second full year racing. My husband Todd was involved for many years. When we got married in 1979 we decided to build a car for him. He drove it and I helped wrench. Years later our three kids all raced. Now that they are all grown up, it is finally my turn.

In a predominantly male sport are you treated fairly / equally by your fellow male racers?

Yes, I feel that I am treated like an equal.

What are the top 3 things that you enjoy the most about drag racing?

1. The time I get to spend doing something the entire family enjoys.

2. Striving to get that perfect light.

3. The rush that I get going down the track at over 100mph and knowing that the blue lights aren't

after me.

Recently woman have been dominating the national drag racing circuit. What do you think is the reason for this?

I think because it's not a competition of strength or power. It is an equal sport that is fair, and anyone can become the champ.

Who is your favorite female racer and why?

Shirley Muldowney. She competed with the men against all odds. No matter how hard they tried to stop her, she never gave up. She raced against the best and won!

Is there anyone that you would like to thank for helping you get started into drag racing?

My husband Todd for always believing in me no matter what. I would also like to thank my kids for tagging along and helping whenever I needed it. My son Zack actually let me race his Vega before he sold it and is what got this need for speed started.
